great fit, incredibly comfortable

Evolv Mens Royale Climbing Shoe

Evolv Mens Royale Climbing Shoe

Ok, first to give some context to the review: These are my first pair of climbing shoes. I have only used them on indoor walls. If you are looking at shoes for this price point, I would assume you are not looking for expert cutting edge climbing shoes.

I gave these shoes a high rating because they fit well to my foot, and I have had no issues with them after hours of climbing at my gym. They are true to size. I wear an 8.5 US shoe size in Brooks running shoes, Asolo hiking shoes, and a couple other brands. So, I ordered a 8.5 in these. My big toe just touches the front. After 2 hours of climbing, my big toe feels slightly pinched. To me, that seems about perfect for climbing shoes.

As far as the style, you may notice that this style of climbing shoes is pretty universal. These look a lot like the Mad Rock shoes that I was wearing as rental shoes. I also looked at some 5.10 coyote shoes that look like these in red.

I'll update this review if anything pops up. But for now, I would say these are a great choice for a first set of climbing shoes.

  2. got a great price for these shoes. Wearing them was amazing. My only comparison is gym rentals though. But compared to that they were comfortable, didn't hurt at all and fit perfectly. Be forewarned the blue dye does rub off but I was getting that problem with blue rentals as well. It comes off very easily...

  3. I climb indoors, and some natural- and these shoes work well for both. They are a nice quality, and well sized as far as climbing shoes go. Plus they're evolv, so they will re sole them for you. They're like the Chaco of climbing shoes. Basically, if you want a good general climbing shoe, (trad, outdoor/indoor) then these are great. Just be warned- you will have blue feet for a while.

  4. I got sick of the stinky awful rental shoes and decided I'd buy these as my first pair of climbing shoes ever. I ordered my street shoe size (10.5) and was very pleased with the fit. My heel is snug and the laces allow me to tighten it just right to my foot. My toes touch the front of the shoe, with my big to curling slightly as they're supposed to with a good climbing shoe. I have gone to the gym twice with it and have been very very happy with them. They seem to be wearing only slightly after many hours of climbing, which makes me think they'll last a long time. I'd read elsewhere that leather shoes often stretch, so order few sizes smaller, etc etc ... I read more on these at the product webpage and it said the synthetic lining keeps it from stretching much - so far that seems true. I would describe my foot as "full" - definitely not narrow, leaning toward the wide side - like I said though, the laces probably help it fit many different feet well.

  5. Rentals suck... They smell, they're generally worn out and they almost never fit propperly. These shoes are entry level from what I understand but they are comfy and the grip is fantastic. I've only climbed in them 30-40 times (gym) and there is no noticeable wear...

  6. I bought these shoes for indoor rock climbing. I was tired of the stinky rentals and was going to the gym more and more often. I am a woman, but these shoes fit perfectly for me. I have slightly wider than average feet and run on the large size, 8.5 (flats); 9 (sneakers). I bought these as an 8, they fit like a glove to my feet, not too tight, but comfortably snug. When I went to buy them the sales woman suggested going down a size, she said they should be so painful you need to take them off when not climbing and to expect bruised and missing toenails, but I prefer the more comfortable option. These are great, especially for indoor rock climbing. I can climb for several hours, and stand just fine on chips. I don't feel like my foot slips or moves at all, but at the end my feet are only slightly sore, and my toe nails still intack.

  7. i know these are technically marketed as men's shoes, but any climber will tell you that as long as they're comfortable, it doesn't matter. i don't have large or wide feet and these still fit perfectly. i consider myself an intermediate climber, and i climb for a couple hours at least three times a week, and the shoes have held up very nicely. there's hardly even noticeable wear on the soles or toes.

  8. I was a little skeptical on this shoe when I bought it because it was such a good deal, but I was mistaken. This shoe rocks! It has enough give as well as enough curvature in the shoe to help you get into the hard to reach cracks. Get this shoe!
