Sister Mercedes Temple Doom ebook

I love Brian's stories for many reasons. They are funny and insightful on their own. But for me - a transplanted Southerner in Yankeeland - they go a long way to explain the benevolent (at least most of the time) institutions of Catholicism and simply being Irish in a way that probably doesn't even exist in Ireland. OK, so I don't really think they are all that benevolent - I was being nice. But these stories do make them funny! As another fat little boy, I well remember the "husky" department in department stores. I grew up in a time and place where Catholics were rare. However, my own Southern Baptist mentors taught me that all Catholics were going to hell, and now I understand why! Substitute Southern Baptist for Catholic, and although there are differences, the similarities are disturbing. I can only hope that one day I will be able to approach my childhood with the humor and sensitivity that abound in these stories.

Brian is also the universal man who is always in front of me in the ATM line. Oh, and remind me to avoid Chinese buffets with the Petti family!

Sister Mercedes is a "must read" for all.

  2. Anyone growing up in the 70' and 80's will love this read! As will the parents of the kids that grew up in this time period. If you grew up in Catholic school/household you will laugh evem more. I havent laughed out loud from a book in a very long time and with each story I found myself getting "shushed" for laughing and asked what the heck I am reading. Bravo Brian Petti. Keep the books coming!

  3. Over the years, I've been lucky enough to read the author's work. His insight into people is uncanny. I love his humor and his depth. It's unlikely once you've read one of thes stories, you'll not want to seek out everything he's ever written. Do yourself a favor, and check this out...

  4. I've been reading Brian Petti's plays and blog posts for years and I loved reading this collection. Brian's writing makes you feel intimately involved in his world. Whether it's facing demons, cherishing tender moments or shaking a righteous fist at the world's indecencies, Brian has gathered together a series of stories that describe our universal connection.

  5. Brian Petti is a superbly talented playwright and now non-fiction author. Playwrights find a way to display life's ups and downs in a manner that reaches us on a deep level. Mr. Petti's newest venture "Sister Mercedes and the Temple of Doom" does the same but in an entirely different format. You can't read but a paragraph or two without finding something that ties into your own life. He writes about the key fundamentals--family life, love, loss, and the deeper learning that only comes from tackling life's joys and hardships. He gets very personal about his own ordeals and yet writes of them with a bounce-back optimism that gives every reader a sense of hope, a sense that resilience is possible--a sense that life is wonderful and meaningful even when times are tough.

It's the perfect book for the browser, the thumb-through-er, or the can't-put-it-down type of reader. And like most stories of every day happenings that we can all relate to, you will find something new with every re-reading.

Do something nice for yourself today. Get this book. And get ready to smile.

  6. Reading Brian Petti is like having a conversation with an old friend. With every chapter of "Sister Mercedes and the Temple of Doom", the reader finds something in Mr. Petti's open and honest words that relate to one's personal life. Funny, inspirational and moving. Read it from cover to cover in one sitting or read it for an occasional pick me up, but read it!

You'll be very glad you did.
